NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly impersonating a Member of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh and cheating a businessman of over Rs.22 lakh in Okhla here this past month.
Two of his alleged accomplices, including a personal assistant to Bahujan Samaj Party MP Mohammad Tahir Khan from Sultanpur, are absconding. Mr. Khan would also be questioned in this regard, the police said on Saturday.
According to the police, one Raj Kumar approached complainant Shri Ram, who owns a garments shop in the Okhla Industrial Area, earlier this year and placed an order for urgent procurement of garments to be supplied to flood-affected areas in Bihar. Raj Kumar invited Shri Ram to the MP’s official residence at 51 South Avenue a few days later and introduced to him one young man as Mr. Tahir Khan. Raj Kumar also introduced the businessman to S. Khan, personal assistant to Mr. Khan.
The young man, who was impersonating the MP, along with S. Khan and Raj Kumar later visited the Shri Ram Cloth Centre of the businessman and placed an order for 50,000 garment pieces at Rs.45.50 apiece. The businessman was presented a cheque of Rs.10 lakh signed by S. Khan as Sahid Khan.
The businessman twice put up the cheque for credit to his account but it was dishonoured. He then approached S. Khan several times for the payment, but was always turned back on one pretext or the other.
He later learnt that the garments procured from him for supplying to flood-affected areas were being sold in the open market and lodged a complaint at a local police station.
Taking up investigation, a team comprising Sub-Inspector Girjesh Singh and Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajender Singh among others arrested Shiv Kumar for allegedly posing as Mr. Tahir Khan. He was travelling in a car bearing fake sticker of the 14th Lok Sabha and a beacon at the time of arrest.
The car was found to be registered in the name of T. Sushila, wife of S. Ayyappa, who is a driver of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren.
Several fake identity cards of media personnel and visiting cards of bureaucrats and politicians have allegedly been seized from Shiv Kumar. “We are looking for S. Khan and his accomplice Raj Kumar. Tahir Khan MP will also be questioned in this regard,” said Mr. Singh.
