The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Sitapur (Uttar Pradesh) seeking reports within eight weeks on the death of a prisoner and serious injuries to another after they were mercilessly beaten up on March 13 while being interrogated in a murder case.

The Commission pulled up the SP asking why he did not inform it within 24 hours as per its guidelines on any death in police custody. Both officers have been asked to take appropriate action with regard to investigation as per the Commission's guidelines and send the reports of the inquest, magisterial inquiry and post-mortem of the deceased along with the independent investigation report.

The Commission took up the complaint based on media reports which said cops of the Tambour police station took Sartaj and Jabbar for interrogation and they were beaten up and tortured by the Station House Officer and personnel from the Special Operations Group. Around midnight that night the police brought Jabbar to the district hospital in a serious condition and he succumbed to the injuries later. Sartaj is undergoing treatment for serious injuries.
