Noted scholar and Director, Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Surjit Singh, died here on Wednesday following a massive cardiac arrest. Prof. Singh was a prolific scholar with 13 books and over 90 articles in national and international journals on diverse themes ranging from agricultural economics, rural and agricultural credit to globalisation, trade and climate change.
Prof. Singh was 58 and is survived by his wife Varsha Joshi and daughter Deepakshi.
Surjit Ji, as he was fondly called by his friends and colleagues, carried out a large number of research studies for the Planning Commission and Union Ministries, the NABARD, the Bank of India, the ILO, the WFP, the IDRC (Canada), the World Bank as well as finance, agriculture and other departments of the Rajasthan Government.
Director of IDS since 2007, Prof. Singh was also a member of various bodies of the State government.
