The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to go after government agencies in a bid to recover property taxes that have been due for several years. Eight government agencies such as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Delhi Development Agency (DDA), Airport Authority of India (AAI), Delhi Jal Board, Delhi International Airport Private Limited (DIAL) and several power discoms, owe the Corporation a total of Rs. 454.89 crore in property taxes.

“We have already sent notices to the defaulters specifying the total amount they need to pay as tax,” said Municipal Commissioner P. K. Gupta. “Once, the notice period is over, we will take further action,” he added. The civic body is looking into freezing the bank accounts of the agencies.

While the DDA has the biggest amount of Rs.356.35 due to the civic body, the DMRC owes property tax for properties such as Subhash Nagar, Vishwavidyalaya and Rithala. In addition, DJB owes Rs.23 crore, DMRC owes Rs.9.4 crore, AAI Rs 20.46 crore, NDPL Rs 2.65 crore.

The issue of overdue tax amounts has been pending for several years, said officials. While some of the agencies have questioned the demand for tax, in some other cases the matter is subjudice. Till early December, the civic body has collected Rs. 193.71 crore as property tax as against a target set at Rs.351 crore for the financial year.
