The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has pulled up the Uttar Pradesh Police over an alleged incident wherein a truck driver, Wahid, who refused to pay bribe to policemen was beaten up by them due to which he lost vision in one eye.

The Commission, which acted on reports in the media on October 19 this year after the clipping were forwarded by a journalist, issued notice to the Meerut Range DIG seeking a report on the matter within four weeks along with a status report on the health of the victim.

The driver was reportedly beaten up by the policemen at the Jani Gang Nahar police station.

Later he was admitted to a hospital in Meerut for treatment where doctors opined that victim had lost vision in the injured eye.

There was a similar incident in U.P. last year when a truck driver who refused to give a bribe was beaten to death by officials of the Road Transport Authority. The issue is still pending with NHRC.
