NEW DELHI/GURGAON: Initially Mohammad Akhtar could not believe it when one of the five accused arrested for the murder of his teenaged son turned out to be his neighbour Mehtab Ali’s son Aftab, who had been camping at their residence ever since the boy was kidnapped.

“I first came to know about the involvement of Aftab when his father Mehtab called me up on December 29 morning saying that his son had been detained by the police. I accompanied Mehtab to the police station and told them that Aftab was like my son. He could not be involved,” said Mr. Akhtar.

“Aftab and his parents used to come to our house quite frequently, but they visited us every day after Azhar went missing on November 21. Aftab and his mother sometimes even stayed overnight. Aftab kept a watch on our movements and passed on the information to his accomplices,” said Mr. Akhtar.
