Stating that exclusive breastfeeding of a child for the first six months is crucial for preventing infant mortality and malnutrition, Union Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath has said there was an urgent need to create awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding.

Speaking at a four-day “World Breastfeeding Conference” which started in the Capital on Thursday, the Minister said that optimal breastfeeding together with complimentary nutrition can prevent malnutrition and save one million children's lives.

The conference titled “Babies Need Mom-made, Not Man-made” is being organised by the Global Breastfeeding Initiative for Child Survival together with the Health and Family Welfare Ministry and the Women and Child Development Ministry.
