NEW DELHI: The National Film Awards are also set for a revamp. They could soon involve a two-tier judging process, include new categories and offer doubled cash prizes.

The Expert Committee on National Film Awards, headed by filmmaker Shyam Benegal, has submitted its report to the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ambika Soni. The recommendations, aimed at making the awards more contemporary, include a suggestion to constitute a central jury and five regional juries, to cover different languages. The two-tier viewing would facilitate the selection process, the committee felt.

It recommended new award categories such as best audiography, music, screenplay and dialogue, and separate awards for educational and environmental films. The cash prizes could be doubled for non-feature films to bring them in line with feature films, said the committee.
