Former Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Professor Mushirul Hasan was conferred the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund on the occasion of the 124{+t}{+h}birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister here on Thursday.

“Roads to Freedom – Prison, Prisoners and the Raj”, is the title of Prof. Hasan’s fellowship project.

“The British paid a lot of attention to prisons; there is an enormous amount of work that has been done on the subject by the National and State Archives,” he said.

Professor Hasan’s project will also see how jails were used during the time of the Raj to bring down the body and soul of those resisting or revolting against the British. “Freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi spent a lot of time in prison and the project will also see how they coped with the conditions imposed on them,” he added.

Professor Hasan is an internationally known historian and has written extensively on the Partition. He did his M.A. from Aligarh Muslim University and Ph D from Cambridge in 1977.

He was awarded Padma Shri and the “Ordre des Palmes Academiques” by the French Government in 2010. He was also the Director-General of the National Archives from May 2010 to May 2013.
