Sets afire a Delhi Transport Corporation bus

Later, Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed in the area

The Moti Nagar police have registered a case and are identifying those involved

NEW DELHI: Protesting against an anti-encroachment drive being carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in New Moti Nagar here on Wednesday, an angry mob tried to set afire a Delhi Transport Corporation bus and overturned an anti-riot vehicle “Vajra” .

Trouble erupted on Moti Nagar Road around 12-15 p.m. when the demolition squad, accompanied by a large police contingent, was working on a property inside the colony. The mob attacked and damaged some MCD vehicles, two DTC buses and tried to set another bus on fire.

Fire tenders were pressed into service to put out the blaze.

Shouting slogans in protest against the demolition drive, the residents also overturned an anti-riot vehicle stationed along the road and tried to set afire a tempo, but disappeared from the scene when the police arrived.

Later, Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed in the area to prevent further trouble. The Moti Nagar police have registered a case and are in the process of identifying those who indulged in violence. On Wednesday, the demolition squads were able to target just six properties. The MCD officials said the demolition work, being carried out at the instance of the court, would be resumed only when adequate security was provided to them.
