Milkha runs to ‘Save Girl Child’

Milkha Singh has lent his support to the “Save Girl Child” campaign by participating in a symbolic run to create awareness for the cause.

At an event organised on Sunday by the Press Club of India and flagged off by the legendary athlete, effort was made to highlight the importance of supporting girls to take to sports also.

The run, from India Gate to the Press Club, attracted a decent participation with young and old joining Milkha even as he made a fervent appeal to save girl child.

“We are all assembled here for a good cause and I would appeal to you to stand up for girl child. We have to respect the girl child in all walks of life. I feel very happy when I see women excelling in sports. It augurs well for the society,” Milkha said.

PCI secretary general Anil Anand said, “The participation was warm. We had a lot of youngsters from NGOs and the Border Security Force personnel. Milkha was given an overwhelming response to his appeal,” said Mr. Anand.

PCI president Anand Sahay presented Milkha with a shawl and a momento with a promise to hold a sporting event for girls. Milkha also pledged his support in any such event in future.
