NEW DELHI: The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has alleged that the civic body administration is harassing people by sending arbitrary notices for collecting property tax arrears and mutation charges.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, senior BJP Councillor Vijender Gupta alleged that nearly four-lakh notices pertaining to arrears had been sent asking people to pay up immediately or face action. People were not being given an opportunity to contest the claims as mandated in the unit area method (UAM) of property tax collection, which was a violation of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

"The Congress-ruled MCD has failed to meet the targets set for property tax collections and is now harassing people and forcing them to pay arrears. It has again brought back inspector raj, which is against the new tax regime that states that finalisation of pending arrears could be done only after discussing the issue with the tax-payer," he charged.

Similarly, he added, the MCD was asking property owners who had not fully transferred their properties to pay mutation charges, which was against the law, he said.
