On councillors’ funds issue

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has locked horns with the Delhi Government after Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit rejected the civic body’s proposal to increase the Municipal Councillors’ Local Area Development Fund from Rs.1 crore to Rs.2 crore.

MCD Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta said: “We strongly criticise the interference of Ms. Dikshit in the working of the MCD. This kind of unlawful interference will not be tolerated at any cost. The move reflects the hypocrisy of the Delhi Government which boasts Bhagidari schemes.”

According to Mr. Gupta, the allocation was doubled during this financial year in order to strengthen the hands of councillors, irrespective of their party affiliation. “The councillors are now in a better position to visualise the development works they wish to carry out keeping in view the needs of the residents.”
