Matia Mahal constituency MLA Shoaib Iqbal and some others were injured in a clash between two groups over an underground boring work at Turkman Gate in Central Delhi on Wednesday.

The MLA's personal security officer fired three rounds in the air from his service pistol to disperse the assailants.

“The Delhi Jal Board officials were also at the proposed boring site when the incident took place around 2.30 p.m. Some local mischievous elements stopped the boring work,” said Mr. Iqbal, who has been admitted to Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital with injuries. The MLA was getting a water-pump installed from his own fund.

The police said trouble began when one Hazi Manjoor and his sons asked the team to take up the boring work on Sunday, pointing out the area remained crowded on weekdays and it would cause inconvenience.

This led to an altercation between them and Mr. Iqbal's aide Sahabuddin. Following a heated exchange, Sahabuddin called up the MLA, who reached the spot to resolve the matter.

However, the situation worsened leading to a clash between the two parties.

“They pelted stones and also opened fire at us. Two of them were carrying firearms,” alleged Mr. Iqbal.

According to the police, Mr. Iqbal's PSO Head Constable Gopi Chand finally fired three rounds in the air to bring the situation under control.

While heavy security arrangements were made to maintain law and order, senior police officers visited the area to take stalk of the situation.
