NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old mason has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a minor girl in Narela here.
The accused, Sanjay Kumar, was without a job for quite sometime and had borrowed huge sums of money from locals who had been pressuring him to return the money. He also bore a grudge against the victim's father for not lending him money.
Dharambir, a resident of Krishna Nagar, lodged a complaint with the local police on Monday saying that his six-year-old daughter had gone missing while she was playing a day earlier. He further said that an unidentified man had called him and demanded Rs.3 lakh for the release of his daughter.
A case was registered and a team was constituted to investigate the matter. Meanwhile, the caller called up Dharambir several times to enquire whether he had arranged for the money. When the kidnapper called up Dharambir again asking him to come near a transformer on Mansa Devi Road, the latter identified him as his one-time neighbour Sanjay Kumar.
The team swung into action and arrested Sanjay Kumar during a raid at his rented accommodation in Singhu village.
Sanjay initially tried to mislead the police, but later purportedly confessed to having kidnapped and murdered the girl.
The body of the girl was recovered from a house in Krishna Nagar where he resided earlier. The mobile phone used for making ransom calls was also seized.
