A Maoist squad member was arrested by the police near Jhargram in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district on Thursday while he was extorting money from the staff of a primary health centre in the region.
According to the police, Amal Mahato was a part of the rebel squad headed by Jayanta that was active in the region and was responsible for several killings and abductions.
“We had prior information that the Maoists extort 25 per cent of the salaries of the Mohanpur healthcare centre's employees every month and had posted plainclothes policemen at the site. Mr. Mahato was caught while he was coming out of the building after collecting money. His accomplices, however, managed to flee,” Mukesh Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police of Jhargram police district, said.
Currency worth Rs. 43,000, a small firearm, two bullets and a list of names of those from whom money was to be extorted was found in the possession of Mr. Mahato.
