NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old businessman planning to celebrate the New Year in Macau with his girlfriend allegedly staged his own kidnapping to arrange for the money and sought Rs.20 lakh in ransom from his father.
The accused, Pawan Verma, has been arrested along with his friend Himanshu, who allegedly helped him carry out the plot.
Ram Sahay Verma of West Sagarpur lodged a complaint with the police on December 26 saying that his son Pawan had gone to meet someone near Arya Samaj Mandir and had not returned.
When Mr. Verma called up Pawan, an unidentified man picked up the phone and told him that his son had been kidnapped.
After a case was registered, the unidentified man sent a text message to Mr. Verma and sought Rs.20 lakh in ransom.
The man kept sending text messages to Ram Sahay constantly changing the rendezvous.
Eventually the man asked Mr. Verma to send his other son Puneet near a shopping mall in Dwarka Sector 9 with the money. When a young man came to pick up the bag containing money a police team overpowered him. He was identified as Pawan.
During interrogation, Pawan purportedly told the police he led a lavish life and borrowed over Rs.8 lakh for the expenses. His girlfriend wanted to celebrate the New Year in Macau but he did not have the money. He then hatched a conspiracy along with Himanshu, a resident of Sitapuri, to stage his own kidnapping to arrange for the money.
