A man who killed his wife and dismembered her body was arrested on Tuesday after a relative alerted the police.
Girish Pote, a former salesman with a leading apparel brand and a resident of Bhayendar, a satellite township on the outskirts of Mumbai, had wrapped the body parts of his wife Madhubanti (35) in three plastic sheets. He stored two of them in the refrigerator and the third in his bedroom. He then called his cousin and confessed to the crime.
“The relative initially didn't believe him,” investigating officer S. Pingle told The “But when Pote asked him to meet him at a nearby garden as he wanted some money, the relative alerted two of our constables.” A trap was laid and Pote was nabbed.
“He seems to be mentally unstable and has been changing his statement frequently,” Mr. Pingle said. “He initially claimed he killed his wife because she wanted to move in with her grandparents and he was averse to the idea. Now he claims he hasn't killed her.”
Police have recovered the murder weapon and the remains of the victim. Pote has been booked for murder and destruction of evidence.
Pote married Madhubanti in 2011 and they have a son. Before executing the gruesome crime, Pote entrusted the child with a relative.
Madhubhanti held a French passport as her mother was a French national. Things started going downhill for the two after Madhubanti expressed her desire to move to France, police said
