A man allegedly involved in several criminal cases in the past was gunned down in a police encounter in Rohini here while two of his accomplices managed to escape in the early hours of Wednesday.

The exchange of fire took place at the intersection of Sectors 16 and 17 in Rohini where the police managed to trap the vehicle the accused were travelling in after receiving a tip-off.

A senior police officer said the initial tip off they received was that the accused would be coming in an i10. However, around 10.30 p.m. the informers told the police that Mohan Kumar (32) and his accomplices had abandoned that car and would be coming in an SUV instead.

“A little later, a Scorpio was seen coming from the direction of Shahbad Dairy. As the vehicle reached where the police team had camped, it was surrounded by police vehicles from four sides. Those inside the car were asked to surrender.”

However, the occupants opened fire at the police. The police retaliated and several rounds were exchanged. Even as the exchange of fire was on, two men managed to escape while the car driver, who provided cover fire to his accomplices, was hit. The injured criminal was taken to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead. He was later identified as Mohan. He was involved in some 15 cases and had even been convicted for the rape of a minor some years ago. No policeman was injured in the operation.
