A day after a young man was detained in connection with the murder of Shobhit Modi -- a second year engineering student -- in upscale Vasant Kunj here earlier this month, the police on Saturday said that his statement and movements on the day of incident were being verified.

The suspect, Deepak, was recently released from jail and was absconding since the murder came to light.

He recently returned to the Capital and was picked up from Kusumpur Pahari for questioning following a tip-off.

“Certain facts that came to light during his questioning raised strong suspicion about his involvement in the murder. We are verifying his statement and his movement at the time of murder. He has not been arrested as of now. He is still a suspect,” said a senior police officer.

The police suspect that Deepak stabbed Shobhit when he resisted an attempt to rob him on the fateful day.

Shobhit was found with multiple stab wounds by a security guard of his colony near his house on May 6 evening. He was rushed to a hospital by his family where he was declared brought dead.
