There is a need for proper training of police personnel in matters of procedural law and sensitisation of judges towards gender equality to undo the historical, social subordination of women, said Justice Gita Mittal on Saturday.
She was speaking at a one-day national seminar on “Protecting and Promoting Dignity, Safety and Equality of Women” organised by the Sunanda Bhandare Foundation at Lady Sri Ram College here. The seminar was presided over by Dr. Syeda Hameed, a member of the Planning Commission, and inaugurated by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, of the Supreme Court.
In her address, Dr. Rebecca Tavares, U.N. Women’s representative for India, highlighted the impact of the December 16 gang-rape case on people across the world. This was followed by a session on the “Dignity of Women”.
Various speakers and college students gave presentations which were followed by discussions and interaction.
