The Maharashtra Government has decided to raise the annual cap on the number of subsidised cooking gas cylinders per household from six to nine.

The decision, applicable only to people holding yellow and saffron ration cards, is expected to add a financial burden of Rs.1,600 crore for the exchequer. Yellow ration cards are given to families having an annual income up to Rs.15,000 (Urban Area), while saffron cards are given to families having an annual income of Rs.15,001 to Rs.1 lakh.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
