BJP MLA Kulwant Rana, arrested for allegedly making casteist remarks at a party worker, was granted interim bail by a court here on Wednesday.

The police also faced flak from the court for “its blatant exhibition of institutionalised discrimination between the common man and the elected representatives”.

Mr. Rana was granted interim bail for three months by Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau on an undertaking that he would not indulge in any criminal activity in future.

The court was irked at police’s failure to arrest Mr. Rana, noting that any ordinary citizen would have faced certain arrest for an offence under the Scheduled Castes and Schedules Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The complaint against Mr. Rana was made by Karan Singh, a member of BJP’s Kisan Morcha.
