Former Union Cabinet Secretary C. R. Krishnaswamy Rao Sahib, who was a distinguished IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, passed away in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 86. He is survived by wife Lalitha Rao Sahib (79) and daughters Nalini, Nimmi and Padma, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Rao Sahib had the distinction of working with three Prime Ministers as he was Principal Secretary to Charan Singh and Cabinet Secretary during 1981-85 in the governments of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He also served as secretary to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jalagam Vengal Rao while serving in the State.

Born into a Thanjavur Marathi Rayar (Colathur) family in Tamil Nadu on February 2, 1927, he had his school education in P.S. Higher Secondary School and college education at the famous Presidency College in Madras. Thereafter he wanted to pursue science but decided to enter the Civil Services as the better option. A dedicated and able administrator, he was honoured with the second highest civilian award of Padma Vibhushan.
