NEW DELHI: Distinguished public heath activist K. Srinath Reddy and four other eminent men and women have been conferred this year’s Karmaveer Puraskar. They include Manju Bharat Ram (for transforming school education in India), Rohini Nilekani (for her philanthropic activities), Tarun Tejpal (for excellence in journalism) and Gregory Roberts (also for journalism). Karmaveer Puraskar is meant to honour citizens from various walks of life for excellence and best practices in promoting social justice.

“In a country of almost 120 crore, very few people have the courage of conviction and compassion to stand up, speak out, and lead the change. Karmaveer awards are given to those real-life heroes who believe that it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness,” says J. Almeida, co-founder of NGO iCongo that has set up the award.
