NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party’s tribal leader from Jharkhand Karia Munda has emerged as the consensus candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker.

At 3.15 p.m. on Friday, when the time for submitting ‘motions’ seeking the election of a person to the position came to an end, there were 13 sets of papers signed by leaders of different political parties all in favour of Mr. Munda as next Deputy Speaker. The election is scheduled to take place on Monday.

Two sets of papers were filed by the BJP, the first signed by L.K. Advani and Rajnath Singh, and the second by Sushma Swaraj and Ananth Kumar. Four sets were signed by NDA partners. From the Congress, Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee proposed his name and Parliamentary Affairs Minister P.K. Bansal seconded it.
