Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union office-bearers along with other students' organisations from the university staged a protest outside Tamil Nadu House here on Thursday to express solidarity with those opposing the Kudankulam nuclear project.

“We cannot allow Kudankulam to become a nuclear Nandigram; the State must immediately withdraw police from the area,” said JNUSU president Sucheta De.

The gathering was addressed by Delhi University professor and anti-nuclear activist Achin Vanaik who demanded immediate scrapping of the Kudankulam nuclear plant and condemned the Tamil Nadu government for the crackdown on protestors.

A memorandum was also submitted to the Principal Resident Commissioner demanding withdrawal of the Tamil Nadu government's resolution approving the Kudankulam nuclear plant, an immediate end to the repression of villagers and protestors opposing the plant, release of all the arrested villagers and leaders of the anti-nuclear movement, a thorough and complete probe by geologists, hydrologists and oceanographers into safety issues of the nuclear power plant and the conduct of safety and evacuation drills in the 30-km radius surrounding the project area.
