Agitating Jat organisations demanding reservation in government jobs disrupted rail services in Haryana for the third day on Wednesday. Members of the All India Jat Reservation Action Committee staged a dharna on rail tracks near Gajuwala railway station, affecting traffic and led to the cancellation of trains on the Hisar-Ludhiana route.
Thousands of Jat community members squatted on the railway lines in protest of promises made to them by the government before the Commonwealth Games. “We have been cheated by the government, we accepted their request to let the Commonwealth Games pass peacefully but now we would certainly intensify our campaign,” said the Committee's Haryana president Hawa Singh Sangwan. In violation of a High Court order prohibiting disruption of public services, leaders decided to intensify the stir at the rally held in Mayyar village on Sunday. Train services on Hisar-Rewari line have been disrupted for the last three days and all trains are being diverted to Delhi from Bhiwani.
The Haryana Government has already written to the Centre to grant reservation to Jats and the Union Government has referred the matter to the Backward Classes Commission for consideration. Haryana Power Minister Mahender Partap Singh in a statement issued in Chandigarh said: “The blocking of Hisar-Rewari route will hinder the plying of trains supplying coal to the power generation plants, besides causing hardship to the passengers....Any interruption in supply of coal would lead to closure of power generation plants. ”
The Jats, who are a major vote bank in Haryana, have been pressing for 27 per cent reservation in the OBC quota at the Central Government level.
