Taking into consideration the obligation of supporting four children and his HIV positive status, the Delhi High Court has reduced the prison sentence given to a man convicted for robbery.

The trial court had sentenced Ram Kumar to seven years of rigorous imprisonment under Sections 392 (robbery) and 397 (robbery with attempt to cause death or grievous injuries) of the Indian Penal Code for robbing a man of Rs. 45,000 on the staircase of the Paharganj bridge in Central Delhi in 1997.

The prosecution also conceded that there was not enough evidence to convict Ram Kumar under Section 397.
