The Gujarat Government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the stampede at Bhavnath Temple's annual Mahashivratri fair in Junagadh on Sunday night that left six pilgrims dead and over 40 injured.

“A high-level committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary Varun Maria has been set up to probe the incident,” said a senior officer at the Junagadh District Collector's office on Monday.

The State Government and the Junagadh Municipal Corporation have also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 1 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs. 25,000 each to the injured.

One man, three women and two children were killed and over 40 persons injured in the stampede on the narrow Panj Naka bridge, the lone entrance to the famous Shiva temple 150 km from here. - PTI
