High drama was witnessed on the ninth floor of Delhi Secretariat late on Thursday afternoon when a retired Army commando instructor intervened on behalf of a woman employee of the Unauthorised Colonies Cell and took on Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Tughlaqabad Ramesh Bidhuri who was agitated at the lady employee’s refusal to allow him a hearing in a matter.

As per the retired Army officer, Colonel Devinder Sehrawat, who is also the Secretary of the Grameen Samaj, an organisation working for farmer’s rights, it was around 4-30 p.m. that Mr. Bidhuri got into an argument with the lady and even threatened to throw her out of the window saying he was not an “ aam aadmi’’ .

Mr. Sehrawat said it was only when he confronted Mr. Bidhuri to back-out or to face physical action, that the BJP leader retreated. “There were about 50 people who witnessed the incident and they cheered and booed Mr. Bidhuri out of the office,’’ he claimed.

When contacted, Mr. Bidhuri said the Army officer reacted despite being privy to only one part of the situation. “I had gone to the Unauthorised Colony Cell in connection with the issue of scrutiny of maps of Tughlaqabad. This lady was dealing with my area. However, when I asked her a query, she ordered me to go away saying the public hearing time was over.’’

“In the ensuing argument, I told her that she was a public servant and this was public work. At this she said she was a public servant and not my personal servant. I took offence to her conduct and protested. It was not my personal work either for which I had gone,’’ the legislator said.

Mr. Bidhuri denied that he threatened to throw the woman out of the building. “I only told her that I was restrained because she was a woman. Had she been a man, I would have thrown her out.’’ He said Mr. Sehrawat intervened in the matter without having full knowledge of what had transpired earlier. “I only exited the place to avoid further bitterness,’’ he said.
