Anand Singh Rawat, son of Congress MP from Hardwar and Union Minister Harish Rawat, was elected president of the Uttarakhand unit of the Youth Congress on Tuesday. He defeated Jyoti Rautela by 441 votes. While Mr. Rawat got 556 votes, Ms. Rautela, who was named vice-president, could manage only 115 votes.

Mr. Harish Rawat canvassed actively for his son while his detractors tried to prop up Ms. Rautela, a supporter of former Chief Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari. She enjoyed the patronage of bigwigs like Leader of the Opposition Harak Singh Rawat, Vijay Bahuguna, MP from Tehri, and PCC president Yashpal Arya.

Sangram Singh and Om Prakash Sati, who got 91and 60 votes, were named general secretaries.
