Property tax of Rs.509 crore is pending against different government departments and organisations coming under the jurisdiction of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.

According to Rajesh Bhatia, Chairman of the high-powered Property Tax Committee of NDMC, pending taxes for the financial year 2012-13 include Rs.216.99 crore against the Delhi Development Authority, Rs.7.83 crore against the Delhi Police and Rs.77.63 crore against Northern Railway. “Prasar Bharti has to pay Rs. 115.37 crore and Delhi University is yet to pay Rs. 66.48 lakh to the corporation,” said Mr. Bhatia. He said the Corporation set the target of collecting Rs. 400 crore in property tax during the current financial year.

“The aim is also to multiply the number of tax payers,” he added. Mr. Bhatia said due to shortage of staff, the work of tax collection and property survey was suffering.

“The Property Tax Department is facing acute shortage of staff with 43 posts of Assistant Assessor and Collector, two posts of Superintendents, 30 posts of Head Clerks/Zonal Inspectors, 145 posts of Upper Division Clerks and 43 posts of Lower Division Clerks lying vacant,” he added.
