“Try and spend a day on Rs.33,” with this message Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel sent money orders to a number of senior Congress leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and also Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and challenged them to live on what is considered the benchmark poverty line.

Mr. Goel also condemned the “twisted figures used by the Planning Commission to claim shrinking of poverty in the country” and said the Rs.33 per capita per day criterion in urban centres is laughable. “I do not think that anyone can agree with the government’s calculation that Rs.33 per day is enough for an individual to live in a city like Delhi,” he said.
