It was girls over boys, Chennai over other regions and an overall pass percentage of 98.76 in the Class X CBSE exams, the results of which were declared here on Thursday.
Girls beat the boys by a thin margin. While the girls had a pass percentage of 98.94, the boys had 98.64, a marked improvement from last year’s ratio, where boys scored a pass percentage of just 97.98 in comparison with the girls at 98.48.
Chennai, which had declared its results on May 26, was, like in the past, the region with the highest pass percentage of 99.80, followed closely by a new entrant in the top three list, Panchkula at 99.45 . Ajmer retained the third position with 99.38 pass percentage.
The National Capital continued to do badly by coming in the penultimate position with a pass percentage of 98.4, albeit an improvement from last year’s 97.92. Patna, which was second highest last year, fell to the fifth position with a pass percentage of 99.30.
Institution-wise, a surprise performance was the Central School for Tibetans (similar to JNVs and KVSs and affiliated to the CBSE) which had the highest pass percentage along with the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya schools, both of who had a pass percentage of 99.73. Next with the best performance were the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan schools with a pass percentage of 99.70. Third–up were the private schools with a pass percentage of 99.46. As usual, and in a dangerous downward trend, private candidates performed badly, with a dismal pass rate of 8.89, even lower than last year’s 16.18 and 22.04 per cent in 2011. Cheating cases were down by one. Of the total 10 cases registered across India, Patna accounted for six and Delhi two.
A total of 12,57,893 candidates registered for the examinations this year for whom 11,864 schools and 3,002 centres were put into service.
This year, students intending to continue with the CBSE format for Class XII and enrolled in schools affiliated to the CBSE were not required to take the Board exams and were instead examined by their schools.
