A 35-year-old notorious inter-State gangster and Mewati gang leader has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police for alleged involvement in four cases of dacoity, robbery and car-jacking. He carried Rs.50,000 cash reward on his head.

Acting on a tip-off, the Special Cell team mounted a raid at Surat in Gujarat on January 30 and arrested Mohammad Farooq. He purportedly confessed to his involvement in Hira Jewellers robbery case of Pitampura.

Mohammad Farooq along with his brother Mohammad Arif and Aslam, Mushtaq, Wahid, Sunil, Sakim and Shahnawaz tried to steal a jeep belonging to Hira Jewellers and parked on the road outside in the early hours of June 3 last. While Arif and one of his accomplices tried to drive away in the jeep, security guards Krishan Kumar and Lalit Kumar opened fire at them. One of the bullets hit Arif in the head and he died on the spot. His accomplices fled the spot. A case was registered at the Maurya Enclave police station.

While Aslam, Mushtaq, Wahid, Sunil, Sakim and Shahnawaz were later arrested, Farooq managed to evade arrest.
