Vinay Sharma, one of the accused in the December 16 Delhi gang-rape case, told the special court hearing the case on Friday that he was physically assaulted by Tihar Jail inmates on Thursday night leading to a fracture in his arm.

With his right arm in a cast, Vinay told Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna through his counsel, A. P. Singh, that his hand was broken by inmates to stop him from appearing in a written test for Indian Air Force.

“Please don’t send me to Tihar Jail. I feel scared there. I will jump from here but will not go to Tihar,” said Vinay, whose body also bore injury marks.

Meanwhile, the prosecution opposed Vinay’s plea seeking interim bail for two days to sit for the examination on April 7.

The Judge sought a reply from the Superintendent of Jail No. 7 and directed him to personally appear before the court on Saturday. He also directed the jail authorities to strengthen the security arrangements for the four accused in the case.

After accused Ram Singh’s death at Tihar, the court had asked the jail authorities to be more vigilant regarding the security and safety of the accused in the high-profile case.

The court has also sought a reply from the jail authorities on the plea of Vinay and co-accused Akshay Singh as to why they should not be shifted from Tihar Jail to Rohini Jail. Their defence counsel also sought registration of an FIR in the matter.

On Thursday, Akshay had alleged in court that he was receiving death threats in jail from a police constable who was continuously abusing him. On Friday, another accused, Mukesh, alleged that he was also beaten inside Tihar Jail.

Vinay’s counsel, A. P. Singh, asked: “What is the difference between the State and the accused if this is what happens to under-trial prisoners before the judgment is pronounced?”
