A spate of robberies in September and before
Each time, tens of lakh snatched from victims at gun-point
NEW DELHI: Two men who along with their accomplices allegedly committed a series of robberies in the recent past have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. Two country-made firearms have purportedly been seized from them.
Acting on a tip-off that some criminals would pass through Sector 16 of Dwarka on Wednesday, the police laid a trap and tried to intercept the suspects, three of whom were travelling in a car and two on a motorcycle. Two of them allegedly fired at the police team, but were overpowered. Head Constable Rajeev sustained a fracture in the arm during the scuffle. The accused were identified as Virender and Narender Bisht.
During interrogation the accused purportedly disclosed that they along with their accomplices Phool Singh, Dharmvir, Johnny, Joginder and Amit robbed a man of Rs.28 lakh in Karol Bagh at gun-point on September 19. On September 14, they allegedly tried to rob another man of Rs.10 lakh in Karol Bagh and on September 4 they robbed a businessman of two bags containing Rs.98 lakh at gun-point in the Desh Bandhu Gupta Road area.
The gang tried to rob a jeweller in Karol Bagh on July 27 and fired at him when he raised an alarm. On July 31 they intercepted a car at Keshavpuram and robbed the occupant of Rs.11 lakh at gun-point, the police said. At their instance, the police claim to have recovered a car stolen from Model Town in April.
