The services of the Metro Railways in the city on Sundays will be available to commuters earlier than the present 2 p.m., Railways Minister Dinesh Trivedi said here on Sunday.

During the day Metro services were made available at 12 noon and from next week they will commence at 10 a.m., Mr. Trivedi said adding that if the logistics can be worked out the earlier services may become a regular feature.

“Safety will always be the first priority. If the maintenance work can be carried out, then we can regularise the services starting at 10 a.m. on Sundays,” he added.

Mr. Trivedi also said that he wanted to bring in new coaches as the present ones have become very old. He said that the former Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had also wanted to replace the old metro rakes with new ones. “She had formulated a plan which I want to execute,” he added.

On being asked about increasing the fares for Metro services that have been untouched for several years, Mr. Trivedi said that at present there was no proposal to this effect.
