Were demanding Rs. 1 crore as protection money from brother of Pappu Yadav, MP

NEW DELHI: Four persons have been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police on charges of making extortion calls to the brother of Member of Parliament Pappu Yadav demanding Rs. 1 crore as protection money.

In the early hours of February 2, Mr. Yadav's brother Jagjit Singh received a call on his mobile phone, in which the caller asked him to look outside the window. Jagjit was shocked to see that his Opel Astra car had been set afire. The caller then asked him to arrange Rs. 1 crore and wait for his next call. Acting on Mr. Yadav's complaint, the police registered a case of extortion bid.

The Special Cell zeroed in on one Vikas Barua, a resident of Dwarka, and arrested him for his involvement on February 23. The mobile phone used to make the threat calls was seized from him. During interrogation, Vikas allegedly disclosed that he along with his accomplices, Jaswinder and Sunny Priyadarshi, residents of Patna in Bihar, had conspired to extort the money from Jagjit.

Subsequently, the police mounted a raid at the rented accommodation of Jaswinder's brother Prabhjyot Singh at Patna. The team recovered fake stamps, fake educational degrees, a large number of cheque books purportedly issued in different names and fake identity proof documents from Jaswinder's room.
