Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has initiated a new practice in the State Assembly by paying tributes to former Vice-President of India the late Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on his 88 {+t} {+h} birth anniversary.

He offered flowers at the portrait of Mr. Shekhawat, who had been thrice the Chief Minister of the State as well, over the week-end.

The practice, similar to the one in force in Parliament on the occasion of birth and death anniversaries of former Prime Ministers and Presidents, would be followed in the case of all deceased former Chief Ministers, Mr.Gehlot said. The Speaker has given his approval, he noted.

Floral tributes were paid to Mr. Shekahwat on the occasion by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Ghanshyam Tiwari, Jaipur MP Mahesh Joshi, Rajya Sabha member Ashq Ali Tak, Chief Secretary S. Ahmed and family members of the departed leader.

An all-religion prayer meeting was held in the evening at the memorial site allocated for Mr. Shekhawat by the Rajasthan Government near the Vidhyahar Nagar Stadium on the Jaipur-Sikar Road here.
