The first woman jawan in the Territorial Army, Shanti Tigga, was found hanging in the bathroom of a cabin in Alipurduar Railway Hospital in the State’s Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old jawan, attached to the 969 Railway Engineer Regiment of the Territorial Army, had alleged that unknown persons abducted her on Thursday.

Ms. Tigga was found by villagers tied to a post near the Chalsa railway station on Friday morning. She was handed over to the police and later admitted to the hospital.

Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide. We had provided her security and the guards were deployed outside her cabin. Her son was also in the cabin when the incident occurred,” Superintendent of Police, Jalpaiguri, Amit P. Javalgi told The Hindu over telephone

Police said Ms. Tigga went to the bathroom in the afternoon but did not come out. When there was no response after her son called out to her, the guards broke open the door and found her hanging.

She had joined the Indian Railways in 2005 and later, the Railway Engineer Regiment of the Territorial Army.

According to police, Ms. Tigga was facing an inquiry over allegations that she took money from people and promised them jobs.

The police had also found certain inconsistencies in her statements relating to her abduction.
