Application forms will be available at the Department of English of DU
NEW DELHI: The Combined Aptitude Test for English (CATE) for admission to the B.A. English (Honours) course offered by Delhi University will be conducted on June 17 at 1 p.m.
The test will be held under the aegis of the English Department on behalf of 12 colleges who have signed up for it. Sale and receipt of the application forms for CATE will be done at the office of the Department of English (Room No. 52) at Arts Faculty Building on the North Campus from June 1.
“We decided to keep a single outlet for forms for CATE as there will be a problem of collection of these application forms from 12 colleges,” said Sumanyu Satpathy, Head of the English Department.
Along with the filled-in application form, each candidate will be required to submit two passport-size photographs, a copy of the Class XII mark-sheet and a sum of Rs.100 by demand draft in favour of the Registrar. A candidate needs to submit only one CATE application form to register for the test even though he/she may be applying to more than one college for the course.
An “Open Day” will be held exclusively for English (Hons) aspirants on May 29 at the Arts Faculty on the North Campus at 11 a.m., where information related to the course and CATE will be disseminated.
The exam will be for a duration of one and a half hours, and will evaluate the candidates’ aptitude for the course.
Maintaining that the students appearing for CATE did not need any special preparation, Dr. Satpathy said: “The 100-mark test will comprise multiple choice questions to assess vocabulary, grammar, language skills and literary knowledge of the candidates as well as questions in comprehension and essay writing. Part I will test the linguistic skills, while Part II will evaluate their imaginative writing.”
There will be no interviews.
A list of all candidates who take the test along with their scores will be made available to the 12 colleges, who will then decide the criteria for admitting students.
The colleges which will admit students to English (Hons) through CATE are: Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, Hindu College, Indraprastha College for Women, Kamla Nehru College, Maharaja Agrasen College, Ram Lal Anand College (Evening), Satyawati College (Evening), Shivaji College, Shyam Lal College, Swami Shraddhanand College, Zakir Husain College and Zakir Husain College (Evening).
Students belonging to the reserved categories, such as SC/ST/physically handicapped and foreign students, whose admission is done directly by the university, need not appear for CATE.
Relaxation of benchmark for admission of candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes will be done as per University rules.
