Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has asked the discoms to ensure 24X7 power supply in the Capital. On Saturday, Ms. Dikshit sent out a directive to the discoms to make arrangements for ensuring round-the-clock power supply.

The order comes in the wake of complaints from consumers about rampant power cuts over the past few weeks.

Dismissing the contention of the discoms that the power cuts have been caused by a shortage of coal at the thermal plants, Ms. Dikshit described the power cuts as “unjustified as the peak demand is moderate”. The peak demand in the city has been around 3,500 MW.

She said the power sector in the city was not facing any shortage.

“The consumers should not be forced to face difficulties due to power cuts during the severe cold wave. Ms. Dikshit has also instructed the Power Department to closely monitor the situation and bring power cuts to her notice and that of the Chief Secretary’s,” said a government official.

In her directive to the discoms, Ms. Dikshit has asked them to fulfil their commitment towards the customers.

“The State Government will not allow the discoms to leave the consumers the in lurch by effecting power cuts in the extreme winter season. This is causing inconvenience to the customers,” the official added.
