NEW DELHI: The environmental clearance for the Rs.15,000-crore Vedanta University project has been put on hold by the Central government to re-examine allegations of illegal activities by the promoters.

On April 16, the Union Ministry for Environment and Forests had issued an environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance to the University, proposed to be built on 6,000 acres along the Orissa coast between Puri and Konark.

However, earlier this week the Ministry has sent a letter to the promoters, the Anil Agarwal Foundation, directing that all construction and development works be halted until a detailed examination of the complaints is completed by an Expert Appraisal Committee and a final decision taken.
