A 20-year-old domestic help has been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital with serious injuries in the neck after she was allegedly assaulted by her employers at their house in Rajouri Garden here earlier this week.
The girl, a resident of Gumla in Jharkhand, was brought to the city by her brother-in-law about 18 months ago and placed at the residence of a businessman in Rajouri Garden. In her statement to the police, the girl said the businessman's wife hit her on the back on April 13 over a minor issue and then he also assaulted her. When she complained of a severe neck pain, the employers took her to a doctor. The next day, the victim's brother-in-law took her along and got her admitted to a hospital.
Kamal, a domestic help association representative, alleged that the victim's condition was critical and the injuries could lead to paralysis. “She has alleged that her employers never paid her a salary and would physically assault her. On April 13, she refused to wash clothes as she was not feeling well when her employers hit her with a laundry bat,” he said.
However, the employers refuted all charges claiming that they had themselves taken the victim to the doctor after she complained of neck pain. They said the victim's brother-in-law had in writing accepted that they had taken good care of her before he took her to the hospital.
“We have recorded the victim's statement and are questioning the employers to ascertain the truth. The doctor examining the girl has diagnosed it as stiffness in the neck, but a conclusive opinion has not been submitted so far,” said a police officer, adding that the matter was reported to the police on Monday.
