Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has threatened to launch an agitation if the Union Government does not extend the industrial package given to the hill State by the earlier NDA government.
Mr. Dhumal along with senior BJP leaders including L. K. Advani had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi on Wednesday. He said here on Thursday that he also met Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram along with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Nishank Pokhriyal for re-allotment of the industrial package. He felt that it was because of political reasons that Himachal had been discriminated against as a similar package given to the neighbouring State of Jammu & Kashmir has not been “snatched” because the Congress is sharing power in a coalition government there.
The package in all industry-deficient hill States has been extended except in the BJP-ruled States of Himachal and Uttarakhand, he alleged.
Mr. Dhumal said the issue should be considered above party lines and added: “We are hoping for a positive response from the Prime Minister since we had also requested the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to take up the issue with Dr. Singh.”
