Coinciding with the anniversary of violence at the Maruti Suzuki plant in Manesar on July 18 last, in which a senior manager was killed and over 100 people were injured, the sacked workers on Thursday held a peaceful demonstration near Leisure Valley Park in Sector 29 here demanding immediate release of jailed workers and an impartial probe into the incident. Though students and faculty members of different colleges and universities in Delhi also took part in the demonstration to express solidarity with the agitating workers, most of the workers’ and trade unions stayed away from the protest. Families of jailed and sacked workers did not turn up as they were “scared to raise their voice against the administration following a year of suppression and witch-hunt by the police”.

The agitators alleged that the police did not allow a large number of workers from Dharuhera to reach the venue and terrorised them.

The demonstrators raised slogans against the Haryana Government and the police for allegedly acting at the behest of Maruti Suzuki and denying the workers a fair probe and the right to protest.
