NEW DELHI: Delhiites witnessed the rare “Srinivasa Kalyanotsavam” wedding ceremony of Lord Balaji with his consorts Sri Devi and Bhudevi here on Saturday evening. Over 25,000 people thronged the grounds of Sri Venkateswara College at Dhaula Kuan where the event took place. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also attended the ceremony for a while.
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) at Tirupati performed the ceremony replete with all the Vedic rituals.A representative of the Dharma Prachar Parishad translated the meaning and context of these rituals in English language as they were being conducted.
The ceremony began at around 6 p.m. and continued till 8-30 p.m. after which ladoo prasadam and samples of holy rice were distributed to the devotees. The archakas, who perform the rituals at Srivari Temple in Tirumala, were the officiating priests for the “Srinivasa Kalyanotsavam” in Delhi. The festival was conduced as per the Hindu custom of marriage with “homam”, “samprokhsana” and “pravara”. During this event, Annamacharya (the mystic saint-composer of the 15th Century) keertanas were also recited.
