Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday revealed that the Ranjan Daimary-led National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) had sent him a message that the outfit was willing to enter into a ceasefire agreement with the government. Mr. Gogoi said that he had received a message that the NDFB faction was coming forward for ceasefire. The other faction of the NDFB-led by Dhiren Boro is currently holding talks with the Centre's Interlocutor P.C. Haldar.
Mr. Gogoi's revelation came at a function held here in which former Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar and noted Assamese writer and Gnanpith award winner Indira Goswami a.k.a. Mamoni Raisom Goswami launched an authorised biography of the Chief Minister in the presence of Mr. Gogoi and his wife Ms. Dolly Gogoi. The biography titled “Tarun Gogoi: The Inside Story of A Blunt Politician” has been penned by senior journalist Wasbir Hussain. Mr. Gogoi said that “almost normalcy” has returned to the State and all insurgent groups, except a minor faction of United Liberation Front of Asom, have come forward for talks.
Bodo peace accord
Showcasing the Bodo peace accord signed by the erstwhile Bodo Liberation Tigers, Mr. Gogoi said that Bodoland Territorial Council areas were no longer troubled areas and they had been witnessing massive development activities following signing of the peace accord.
In his speech, Mr. Aiyar described the Chief Minister as a “practical politician” and said that Mr. Gogoi never hankered after power. Rather positions of power always chased Mr. Gogoi, added Mr Aiyar. The senior Congress leader also claimed that Mr. Gogoi was sure to be Chief Minister for a third term when the State went to Assembly polls in 2011.
Nehru's spell on Gogoi
“The book talks about how Nehru had cast a near magic spell on Mr. Tarun Gogoi while he was a student of class III, and how he managed to steer clear from being with any of the lobbies in the faction-ridden Congress party in his native Jorhat just as he plunged into active politics in 1962. ..The book talks about Indira Gandhi spotting and picking him to work with Rajiv Gandhi, and his installation as the Pradesh Congress president at a time when the party was negotiating a very critical phase in the State. Landmark events of the time have been weaved in to make the book a commentary or signpost of Assam's contemporary political and social history,” said Mr. Hussain about the biography.
